5 tune-ups every collector car owner should do
The roads stretch out before you, the windows are down, the cool breeze is filtering throughout the car and the sun is slowly setting. What makes this moment even better is that your collector car is there to share it with you.
Giving your car some much needed TLC can help make those moments last. Before you set out on a drive of your own, it’s important to perform routine checks on your collector car to ensure it’s ready for the road ahead.
Add these 5 steps to your routine schedule.
- Fill your tank with a fuel stabilizer. Make sure you treat the fuel in the tank with stabilizer. You want to run the car long enough so the treated fuel can reach the carburetor or fuel injectors.
- Hook up a quality battery tender. These devices will keep the battery fully charged for the months the car is sitting in storage. With the cost of batteries now, making sure your battery is well maintained is worth the effort.
- Do a tire check. Giving the tires on your collector car a proper cleaning along with treating them is very important to do before the colder weather settles in. Cleaning and treating your tires with a tire gel or spray keeps them from dry rotting. Another good idea for optimizing tire performance in the spring, is to jack up the car and get the weight off the tires to avoid flat spots.
- Prevent mice infestations. Mice love to nest in cars. Especially during the freezing cold months, they’re looking for somewhere to stay. But lets make sure that spot is not your car. Placing traps or rodent deterrents in the garage where the car will be stored is critical to prevent any significant damage these little creatures can cause. Consider using a professional service if necessary.
- Keep the moisture out. The ethanol in gas mixed with unheated garages can cause condensation in the engine and moisture inside the car. To protect the interior of your car from mold or mildew, moisture absorbers or desiccants can be useful for long-term storage. Or a small fan or dehumidifier in your garage can help cut down on moisture and potential corrosion.
Now that you’re ready for that scenic cruise, take a little time to give your ride a proper inspection. Whatever weather you find, it helps to know your car is equipped to handle it.
