E-bike riding tips for every cyclist

by American Modern July 17, 2024

When you think of metropolitan streets, you typically picture lots of cars, buses, trucks—in other words, traffic. The overcrowded streets often deter cyclists from venturing downtown. But that’s what electric bikes are for.

Urban riders have found a new way to get around town. E-bikes provide a sustainable and effective way to get from place to place without sitting in miles of traffic or even hunting down a parking spot.

E-bikes have their risks as well if you don’t ride with caution. Here are a few tips to check out to ensure you ride safely and responsibly.

  1. It’s not a motorcycle. Yes it does have a battery and can go much faster without only relying on your own pedaling, but you still have to watch your speed. With higher speeds that these bikes can reach, it can pose a danger to you and those around you if the speed is not controlled. When you’re riding, make sure you pay attention to how fast you’re going and only ride at a comfortable and safe speed.
  2. Maintain a working braking system and pay close attention to your surroundings. Every month or two, it’s smart to give your brakes a good inspection. With the weight of the bike, the brake pads can quickly wear down if you are constantly applying a large amount of pressure when coming to a stop. Which is why it is important, when preparing to slow down, you give yourself enough room and time to safely stop.
  3. Keep a close eye on your e-bikes battery. All modern e-bikes use the power of lithium-ion batteries, and with that comes precautions cyclists need to be aware of. These batteries can be dangerous if not cared for correctly. Make sure you always follow the manufacturer’s instructions about proper storage and charging. As you go to charge your bike, never have it charging unsupervised, as this is how several e-bike fires have started. For other battery tips check out Consumer Reports battery fire prevention tips.
  4. Protect yourself. Helmets are the one fashion accessory cyclists should never ride without. Helmets and other protective gear are extremely effective and can only benefit you in the event of an accident—if you’re wearing the correct one. There are many styles of helmets out on the market to suit whatever your riding style may be. When shopping for a helmet, make sure it’s properly fitted and sized so it can do its job of protecting you.

Whether you’re commuting, riding for fun, or simply looking to get some exercise in, make sure you get up to speed on these safety tips before setting out on your next adventure.
