Safety first: 5 tips for a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend
Barbeques, fireworks, bonfires, boating and long days in the sun are just some of the many ways millions of Americans celebrate Labor Day weekend. Whether they be traveling or hanging out in the backyard, everyone finds a way to enjoy the remainder of the summer days before the fall weather makes an appearance.
Wherever you and your family may find yourselves, safety precautions might be the last thing on your mind this holiday weekend. Pushing them to the backburner can lead to injuries or accidents that could have been easily prevented if proper safety measures were taken prior.
For a safe Labor Day weekend check out these tips to keep the fun going all day long.
- Use caution when grilling. Even if you consider yourself a grill master, accidents can happen within the blink of an eye, no matter how skilled you are. - Drive safely. Wherever you may be traveling, even if it’s a quick drive to the grocery store for late night s’mores, driving safely is always important. Wear your seatbelt, stay aware of your surroundings and drive defensively.
- Wear sun protection. Skin cancer doesn’t take long weekend vacations. If you plan on spending a lot of time outside, protect yourself by reapplying sunscreen every two hours and wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes while you are enjoying the outdoors.
- Stay safe in the water. No matter if you’re doing cannonballs into your backyard pool or tubing on the lake, there is always risk when water is involved. Be aware of the rules of the water, always keep a first aid kit handy and never swim alone. For more on pool safety, check out these tips on our blog.
- Be careful around fireworks. Nothing beats laying out a blanket and watching a fireworks show on Labor Day weekend, but for commercial fireworks, things can get even more dangerous. Always follow your local laws and never allow children to handle matches or light their own fireworks, keep buckets of water close for any emergencies, and stay away from buildings when lighting fireworks.
However you and your family plan to celebrate, make sure to follow these tips to ensure a safe and fun holiday weekend.
